13:30  - 14:15  :  High quality, affordable and sustainable healthcare: challenges and opportunities

Spreker : Prof Dr Lieven Annemans , Professor Health Economics, Ghent University

Plenary session

Abstract :

It is generally accepted that European healthcare systems need innovative medicines to help reduce morbidity and mortality, and to increase healthy life expectancy in the EU. However, there is ongoing debate about the appropriateness of existing payment models for the pricing and reimbursement (P&R) of innovative medicines.

The growing ability of health systems to measure the outcomes of medical interventions may create new opportunities in the area of pricing and reimbursement, in particular by linking P&R better to the benefits that innovative medicines deliver - for patients, the health system, and society. By ensuring that pharmaceutical spending focuses on treatments that delivers greatest benefit, such an approach can also contribute to the future sustainability of health care systems and of the innovative industry.

In this lecture concrete recommendations will be given towards prices of medicines that are in line with the goals of high quality, affordable and sustainable healthcare.
